Original air date: 27 November 2002

Above is a graphical presentation of the episode, a more detailed text version of the timeline is below

Selected material

Bats hunting insects and spiders

Clouds of bats rising from a single cave (top left). Those from another cave join in (top right). Individual moths from the cloud (left) and their prey, moths.

Bats coping in winter

In Texas they migrate but in Canada they manage differently

A frozen bat, top left. Thermal imaging camera showing Attenborough’s face losing heat. Bottom: A bat (on the left) completely cold with no heat loss and one that has woken up for a drink.

Evolution in reverse?

Bats are aerial predators but the uneaten prey is mainly down on the ground. Solution? The bats abandon flying !!

A bat entering the scene WALKING on its WRISTS. Below is another look where a ring emphasises the use of the wrist (44’32 & 45’15).

The bats actually form packs where if an insect might avoid one bat it would end in the mouth of the next one instead. Obvious on the video, but invisible in this medium.
