04- Fish

Original air date: 2 November 2009

The information above shows how the programme progresses, colour information is the same as in first programme

Selected sequences

Flying fish

The fish use their pelvic fins to take off, left, and stay in the air for a brief moment, right

When mating they tend to use anything they can stick their eggs to …

In the frenzy of sticking their eggs to anything that is around they risk getting entombed themselves

Mudskippers

On dry land

A very strange thing, seeing fish on dry land (19’45-22’50)

But stranger still, seeing them jumping

Various steps in them preparing the jump and then preparing the consequent landing afterwards

Rock climbing gobies

These gobies (locally known as “o’opu”) only need a thin layer of water to adhere to the rock. Not everyone makes it to the top. Presumably they “only” need to climb it once in a lifetime.

There is another climber among the of gobies, the ‘tri tri goby’. The behaviour has turned out to be even more widespread with the more recently documented with the bumblebee catfish being witnessed climbing.
