Selected material

Most striking part in this programme might be the sequence of the web-spinning mother among the leaves of kelp that she is feeding on. It might be of less significance if it wasn’t for the fact that this isn’t a spider or an insect, it’s an amphipod. She’s spinning silk to glue to together two sides of the kelp to form a shelter for her young.

A web-spinning crustacean

A web-spinning (left) creature that belongs to neither spiders nor insects! Turns out to be an amphipod (right) – a group of tiny crustaceans related to lobsters and shrimps.
