Mother caecilian caring for her young

Snapshots from an infrared camera from a mother caring for her young. Until this was recorded scientists seemed (judging from Attenborough’s voice) not to know how the mother cared for her young, it had never been observed. The snapshot from left shows a young yawning, and in its lower jaw teeth can be seen. Something that the young hardly need if they only fed on liquid as previously assumed. Sudden frenzy later in the recording revealed that the mother, several time shed her skin which included fat and other nutrition that the young tore into. Sometimes even scientists learn something new from the recordings used in these series !
